"No Bad Choice"? Christina Thinks Otherwise
In Sunday’s paper, the Dominion Post editorial board said there was “no bad choice” between the three of candidates running for the two open spots on the Board of Education. Christina appreciates the time and consideration of the editorial board.
Christina would like to clarify something: She is very much against book bans. She did say that the BOE should consider potential challenges, taking it out of individual schools’ hands. She is also concerned about teachers being discouraged from teaching certain books because of their challenging content.
Books have to be appropriate to the age level, but beyond that, our children should be free to explore different situations and universes that they might not interact with in their day to day lives. Research has shown that reading diverse books increases empathy in readers and helps to build better citizens. Because of that, our children deserve to have access to books which introduces them to diverse spaces.
